Commentary: In a probable typograhical error, the caption for the book uses ‘Mexican Joe’ rather than ‘Merican Joe which is used elsewhere. Later in 1920, this painting was altered by overpainting the man and the lynx and filling in other areas to create a landscape. See #988alt.
