Commentary: The Monk, inscribed 1898, must date from the fall Illustration Class. It was exhibited in the School of Illustration June 1899 exhibition under the category Class in Draped Model…the figure is static, standing quietly at rest. Painted in somber oils, with a darkened and undefined background, Schoonover has captured the quiet, contemplative life of a man of inaction.” (Drexel University Museum, 35)
